Plumbing services and how to compare quotes

Plumbers price work in a few different ways: flat rates for common jobs, hourly rates plus materials, or a fixed bid for larger projects. Knowing which one you're being offered, and what a good written estimate includes, makes it much easier to compare quotes.

How plumbers price their work

Flat-rate pricing

Many companies use a price book with a set price for each task, such as "replace toilet fill valve." You know the price before work starts, regardless of how long it takes. Ask whether the flat rate includes parts, haul-away, and the trip charge.

Time and materials

You pay an hourly labor rate plus parts, often with a minimum charge. This is common for troubleshooting. Ask for the hourly rate, minimum, and an estimate of hours, and how parts are marked up.

Fixed bids

For remodels, repipes, and new construction, plumbers typically give a fixed price based on plans or a site visit. The bid should spell out exactly what's included and how changes are handled.

What affects the price

  • Access: pipes behind finished walls, under slabs, or in tight crawlspaces take longer
  • Materials and fixtures: who supplies them and at what quality
  • Permits and inspections: required for many water heater, repipe, and remodel jobs
  • Urgency: nights, weekends, and holidays usually cost more
  • Local labor rates and licensing requirements in your area
  • Surprises: corroded valves or damage found once work starts

What a good written plumbing estimate includes

  • Your name, address, and the date, plus how long the price is valid
  • A clear description of the work and what's excluded
  • Brands and models of fixtures or equipment
  • Labor and materials, either itemized or as a flat price
  • Permit and inspection costs, and who pulls the permit
  • Patching of walls or floors, or a note that it's not included
  • Cleanup and disposal of old equipment
  • Warranty on parts and labor
  • Payment schedule and accepted payment methods
  • The contractor's license number where your state requires one

How to compare free plumbing quotes fairly

  1. Give every plumber the same information. Same description, photos, and fixture choices.
  2. Line up the scope. If one quote includes a permit and another doesn't, the cheaper one may not be cheaper.
  3. Check credentials. Verify the license with your state licensing board and ask for proof of insurance.
  4. Ask about the warranty. A longer labor warranty can be worth paying a little more.
  5. Be wary of very low bids, large upfront deposits, or pressure to decide immediately.

Plumbing emergencies

If water is actively leaking: shut off the main water valve. Know where it is before you need it: often where the water line enters the house, near the water heater, or at the meter. If water is near electrical outlets or panels, stay clear and call for help. If you smell gas near a gas water heater or appliance, leave the building and call your gas utility or 911 from outside.

For an emergency, call a plumber directly. Our form works best for planned jobs where you have time to compare quotes. If sewage is backing up and your home is on a septic system, read what to do about a septic backup.

Frequently asked questions

Do plumbers charge to give an estimate?

Many plumbers give free estimates for planned projects like water heater replacement or repiping. For diagnosing a problem in person, some charge a service call or diagnostic fee, which may be credited toward the repair. Ask before the visit.

Can a plumber give a quote over the phone?

For simple, well-defined jobs, such as replacing a specific fixture, some plumbers will quote a price range over the phone or from photos. For leaks, clogs, and anything hidden in walls, they usually need to see it.
